Off-Road Winch Line: Synthetic or Steel Cable, How Do You Pick Without Getting It Wrong?
In one sentence: for off-road recovery, synthetic rope is the easy, safe bet; for hot, abrasive, heavy-duty industrial work, steel cable holds up better. Let's unpack why.
We supplied 3/8-inch UHMWPE winch line to an off-road fleet in the Middle East. At first they insisted on steel cable, arguing that "heavier means stronger." Three months of rock-terrain recoveries later, the 10 mm synthetic line was pulling around 17,000 lb of breaking strength, well above the 9,500 lb of their original steel cable, and two or three people could carry it onto the drum by hand. The most obvious change on site: when it broke, it no longer whipped back toward the crew.
At the same diameter, synthetic rope is not only lighter, it is often stronger too. Taking a common 3/8-inch size: synthetic rope has a breaking strength of roughly 15,000–20,000 lb, versus about 9,000–12,000 lb for steel cable. On weight, over 100 ft the steel weighs about 30 lb while the synthetic weighs about 5 lb, roughly one-sixth. By strength-to-weight ratio, ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is several times to over ten times stronger than steel, which means "heavy equals strong" is a common misconception.
Lighter has real, practical benefits: with synthetic line your nose weight drops, the winch motor works less, and you save fuel and driveline wear. One person can lift the line off the drum and carry it into position, instead of two people hauling dozens of pounds of steel. Synthetic rope is also supple, spools more evenly onto the drum, and won't develop permanent kinks or painful wire burrs the way steel can.
But safety is the true dividing line, and it matters more than any spec. Steel cable, when drawn taut, stores a lot of elastic energy. If it breaks unexpectedly, it snaps back like a whip in an unpredictable direction and can injure or even kill. Synthetic rope has almost no snap-back; when it fails it mostly just drops to the ground, which is a far smaller risk. That is exactly why it has become the mainstream choice in sanctioned off-road competitions.
Synthetic rope does have its quirks. It dislikes sharp edges, high heat (UHMWPE can weaken or grow brittle under long UV exposure or sustained heat and pressure), and being dragged across sand and grit. So after mud or sand, rinse and dry it, and wrap contact points on brackets and bodywork with anti-chafe sleeves. Looked after properly, a good synthetic line lasts for years.
Multiple industry manufacturers agree: synthetic rope wins on roughly one-eighth the snap-back energy, while steel holds the edge in abrasion, heat, UV and chemical resistance. For that reason, steel cable is still widely recommended for industrial lifting, logging and high-heat applications.

Let your use case decide. If you go off-roading, camping, or ford water occasionally and want something light and safe, pick synthetic rope. If you regularly work in heat, rocky abrasive conditions or heavy industry and worry about wear, steel cable is more hard-wearing.
Once you have chosen, confirm two things. First, pick a breaking strength at least 1.5–2× your vehicle's weight. Second, add anti-chafe sleeves wherever the line touches brackets or bodywork. If you are not sure about the exact size, ask the manufacturer: give them your vehicle weight and how you use it, and a pro can match the right size with far more confidence than guessing.
